Barbara Hammer, Contribution to Light (1968)

Barbara Hammer’s early short film, Contribution to Light (1968) will be screened in Sensual Laboratories, an Open City Documentary Festival program at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, UK on April 16, 2026 at 8:30 pm!

Sensual Laboratories features works that attempt to translate live light phenomena onto film and video. Opening with a selection of glass slide transparencies created by experimental film pioneer Sara Kathryn Arledge in the late 1940s, the program brings together a collection of films by British and North American artists from the 1960s and 1970, highlighting the ways in which these artists merged film and light projection in order to expand upon the lineage of abstract cinema. The program will begin with an introduction by curator Sophia Satchell-Baeza, and will be followed by a panel discussion with Jarvis Cocker and John Smith.
