Barbara Hammer, Sappho (1979)

Barbara Hammer’s films Double Strength (1978), Sappho (1979), The Great Goddess (1977), and Multiple Orgasm (1976)  will be featured in Celluloid Is Out: Queer Freedom and Subculture of the 1970s, programmed by Avivit Ashman and Scott Potis, on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at 9:30 pm!

Celluloid is Out presented by Doc Films Chicago seeks to understand queer life as the foundation of avant-garde filmmaking, highlighting queer film pioneers of the 1970’s like John Waters, Curt McDowell, and Michael Wallin, among others.

A curated selection of Hammer’s films will be screened in the 4th installment of the Celluloid is Out series, which runs through December 4, 2025.
