SCREENING: “Celluloid is Out” Series at Doc Films

A curated selection of Barbara Hammer’s films from the 1970’s will be screened in Celluloid Is Out: Queer Freedom and Subculture of the 1970s, programmed by Avivit Ashman and Scott Potis, on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 9:30 pm!

Celluloid is Out presented by Doc Films in Chicago, IL highlights queer film pioneers of the 1970’s, providing a look into alternate networks of radical filmmaking in the period. Featuring notable directors such as John Waters, Andy Warhol, Paul Morrissey, Curt McDowell, Michael Wallin, and Adolfo Arrieta, the program seeks to understand queer life as the foundation of avant-garde filmmaking.

Barbara Hammer’s films Women I Love (1976), Psychosynthesis (1975), Superdyke (1975), X (1973), Dyketactics (1974), Jane Brakhage (1975), Menses (1973), Women’s Rites o Truth Is the Daughter of Time (1974), I Was/I Am (1973), and Sisters! (1974) will be screened in the third installment of the Celluloid is Out series.

A second screening dedicated to Hammer’s work featuring Double Strength (1978), Sappho (1979), The Great Goddess (1977), and Multiple Orgasm (1976) will take place on the following Thursday, October 23rd, at 9:30 pm.
