In 2018, acclaimed feminist filmmaker and pioneer of queer cinema Barbara Hammer delivered a lecture to a sold-out audience at the Whitney Museum of American Art, entitled The Art of Dying (or Palliative Art Making in the Age of Anxiety). Barbara created more than 100 films on widely diverse topics, before dying at age 79 from endometrioid ovarian cancer. She and her partner of 31 years, Florrie Burke, advocated with the New York State legislature for the option of medical aid in dying. Join Corinne Carey from Compassion & Choices and Florrie Burke as they screen this captivating event and discuss Barbara’s life and death. Please note that some clips from films shown during the lecture contain nudity. The re-airing of Barbara Hammer’s lecture is co-presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Whitney is not affiliated with the live discussion hosted by Compassion & Choices. Simultaneous ASL interpretation will be provided.
